          Obituary

Armand Kieffer died a peaceful death but his death was hastened somewhat by an act of violence, so that his passing was like unto that of his three brothers, all whom died violent deaths.
Kieffer, pioneer hotel keeper of La Honda and the last of the well-known Kieffer family of that place, died at the Redwood City Hospital last night, following an operation performed yesterday for a serious ailment. The operation was performed by the attending physicans as a last resort to save the patient's life, but the disease from which he was suffering had already reached too accute a state and Kieffer was unable to withstand the shock.
With the exception of Armand, all of the Kieffer brothers met violent deaths. One was shot and killed many years ago. August Kieffer was thrown from a wagon while driving on the La Honda road about ten years ago and instantly killed, and Valentine Kieffer committed suicide at the hotel in La Honda about two years ago by blowing his head off with a shot gun. Armand, who just died, was shot by a man named Jim Lacey last June in front of the hotel, but the wound did not prove to be serious and he soon recovered.
Armand Kieffer was one of four brothers who came from France in the seventies and settled in La Honda, first taking up occupation of farmer. For several years they rented the Michael Dubs ranch close to La Honda. About thirty years ago they opened the Alpine House about a mile the other side of the La Honda post office. The place soon became famous as headquarters for hunters and fisherman from this city and other parts of the state. On the fourteenth of every July, Kieffer's hotel was the scene of the Fall of the Bastile and visitors came from all over to attend.
The body of Kieffer is now at the undertaking parlors of James Crowe Company on Webster street. Arrangements have not yet been made for the funeral, but it will probably take place Saturday with the interment in Union cemetery.

              Obituary

Valentine Kieffer, known to many who have visited the famous hotel at La Honda, bearing his name, ended his life Saturday morning by shooting himself with a shot gun. He had been in poor health for some time and had become very despondent. He left a note addressed to his brother, Armand in this city, saying he was sick and that there was nothing for him to live for.
Kieffer seemed to be in the best of spirits just a few minutes before his death. He was talking and joking with Albert Meyer and Wm. Seaman in front of the hotel, when he left them and entered the barroom. Shortly afterwards, a report rang out and when the two men rushed into the place they found the lifeless body of Kieffer with a gun, still smoking, on the floor.
The body was removed to the undertaking parlors of the James Crowe Co. and an inquest was held Monday afternoon. The funeral took place Tuesday, the interment being in Union Cemetery.
The Kieffer family, which originally consisted of three brothers, was very well known in this county. Their hotel at La Honda became famous as the place where the French of San Mateo county gathered annually to celebrate the Fall of the Bastile. Another brother, Gus Kieffer, was killed a few years ago when a team he was driving, ran away and he was thrown out.

                Obituary

San Carlos was the scene of another fatal automobile accident Saturday night. Albert E. Kilgore, a one-legged man, while walking along the highway near the Spring Valley pumping plant, was run down from behind by an automobile driven by Miss Elenor McCormick of Palo Alto and so badly injured that he died at the Redwood City Hospital Sunday morning. The man's skull was fractured and he suffered a broken neck. From papers found on his person it was learned that Kilgore formerly lived at 935 Howard street, San Francisco. Deputy Cororner John E. Layng, who took charge of the body, has so far been unable to locate and relatives of the dead man.
At the inquest, which was held at the Redwood City Undertaking Parlors by Cororner W. A. Brooke Monday afternoon, Miss McCormick testified that she did not see Kilgore on the highway until after her machine had struck him. Another car was coming towards her at the time, she said, with such glaring headlights as to almost blind her and made it impossible to see any object in the road ahead of her. The young lady's mother and grandmother and a woman friend were riding with her in the car at the time of the accident. Miss McCormick and her mother took the injured man in thier car to the hospital.
