A Sad Accident
Deplorable Result of the Careless Handling of a Gun.
A Young Girl of San Gregorio Fatally Shot by a Lad.
The Boy Driven Insane with Grief Over the Tragedy and Prevented from Killing Himself by Friends.
Special to the Morning Call.
Redwood City, June 14 – Word was received here this morning of a fatal accident at San Gregorio, twenty-five miles west of this place on the coast, whereby a young girl lost her life. Lizzie Kreiss, 14 years old, daughter of Louis Kreiss, was shot and instantly killed by the accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of Albert Brown, son of a wealthy Oakland undertaker, who was spending his vacation at Kreiss' hunting and fishing. Brown is about 17 years old and in the course of a few weeks had become quite a friend to the girl. They were amusing themselves by handling a gun and he was showing her how it was used. His sleeve caught on the hammer and the gun was discharged, the load striking the girl in the forehead and terribly mutilating her face. She died in five minutes. When Brown saw the effect of the accident he went insane with grief. He broke the gun in pieces and would have killed himself if he had not been prevented by others. They have had to watch him closely since to prevent his doing bodily injury to himself. The parents of the lad were telegraphed for to Oakland. Coroner Crowe left Redwood City this morning to hold an inquest. The funeral takes place to-morrow.

Obituary
MICHAEL KREISS
Redwood City Democrat
October 24, 1895
On Sunday last Michael Kreiss, an old resident of this county, passed peacefully away at his residence in this city after a short illness. Deceased was a native of France, aged 63 years, one month, and twelve days. He came to this country when quite young with his parents who settled in Wayne County, New York where he grew up to manhood and in the year 1853 found the deceased and his brother Jacob in San Francisco. The same year the brothers located in Sacramento and in April of that season, they went to Nevada City and engaged in mining in Sierra County. In 1861, they went to Mexico and after a short stay there, went to Arizona in 1862. California, however, had more charm for them and in 1865 Mr. Kreiss came to San Mateo County and located in Redwood City, where he resided up to the time of his death. He was an industrious businessman and established years ago the Pioneer Brewery, here, the first in the county.
The deceased leaves a wife and several sons and daughters. His daughters are Mrs Davis of Palo Alto, Mrs Durham of Redwood City, a married daughter at Angels Camp and the Misses Emma and Etta at home with their mother. Two sons Charles and Frederick reside here.
Mr. Kreiss was a member of the A.O.U.W., a number of members of which were in attendance at the funeral. The family tho numerous, are all strong and healthy. Of the eight brothers, the eldest is 65 and the youngest one is 44 years of age, Michael being the first to die. Including children and grandchildren, there are 56 members of the family in California, most of who reside in San Mateo County.
Deceased was a man of firmness and business integrity; his last words to his wife relating to business matters and a request that she pay $10 to a man whom he owed.
The funeral took place from the Congregational Church Tuesday afternoon and many friends and acquaintances of deceased were present to pay a last tribute of respect to his memory. The remains were laid to rest in Union Cemetery.
The following acted as pall bearers: Wes Bunn, James Hilton, George Plump, D.H. Offermann, John Glennan, Dave Sampson.

PHILIP KREISS
Redwood City Democrat
March 28, 1908
Philip Kreiss died suddenly Saturday at his home near Summit Springs. He had not been in very good health for some time, but it was not thought that he was in any way dangerously ill. Saturday, complaining of feeling badly, he went from the place where he was working to his home and shortly afterwards expired. Mr. Kreiss was born in Lyons, Wayne County, New York and was 68 years of age. He came to California in 1860 and seven years afterwards came to this county working for his brother, Jacob, on the mountain, a short distance from where he died. Ever since that time the deceased has been a resident of this county, having taken up 160 acres of government land which he cultivated. He left a wife but no children. The funeral took place Monday and was conducted by Redwood City Lodge No. 168 F and M of which he was a member. The interment was in Union Cemetery.

Obituary
San Mateo County Times and Gazette
June 29, 1878
Mr. Joseph Krieg died at his residence on Mound Street on June 25th inst., after a long illness of three years, during which he suffered much. He was the pioneer in the tanning business in Redwood City, having purchased the land where the Smith tannery now stands and started that establishment in 1864. Great industry and untiring energy marked his business life, and in ten years of unremitting labor he thrived and prospered and when he sold out partly on account of his fatal disease, of which he then felt the preliminary symptoms, he was the possessor of a moderate competency as the reward of his efforts. He was buried on Wednesday, the Firemen, of which he was a member, taking charge of the funeral.
