CRUSHED UNDER CAR WHEELS
Unrecognizable Remains Discovered on the Track Near the Bunn Mill
VICTIM IDENTIFIED AS WILLIAM LEARY
The Unfortunate Young Man Fell Across the Rails and Was Stunned by the Fall.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Redwood City had scarcely gotten over the excitement of last week's terrible tragedy when the town was again startled Wednesday night by a shocking accident that sent William Leary, a well-known young man, son of D. G. Leary, the pioneer painter, to eternity.
The accident occurred at about 11:45 o'clock at the crossing on Mound Street, near the old Bunn mill and was caused by the south-bound freight. Half the train passed over the body of Leary, mangling it beyond recognition.
It is supposed that the unfortunate young man was coming from the Five Points and stumbled and fell across the track as the train approached. The body was carried fifty yards, and when picked up by train men presented a sickening sight. The head was severed from the trunk and both legs were cut off. Strips of flesh and bones were scattered along the track for fifty yards. Deputy Coroner Claude Fox was notified, and after gathering up the remains set about to identify them. A watch was taken from one of the pockets, which was at once recognized as belonging to William Leary. There further doubt as to the identify of the body, word of the sad accident was communicated to the young....

Shocking Death of William Leary Last Week
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
William Leary, whose shocking death occurred last Wednesday night, was buried Friday afternoon in Union Cemetery. Rev. J. J. Martin read an impressive service at the grave. There was a large attendance and many beautiful floral offerings were laid on the grave of the unfortunate young man whose untimely and cruel death had created widespread sympathy.
Deputy Coroner Claude Fox held an inquest Monday. John F. McCarthy, the engineer in charge of the freight train that caused the death of deceased, testified that he passed through town going south at about 11:20 p. m. When approaching the Mound-street crossing he noticed the body of a man lying across the track. He sounded the whistle and applied the brakes, but before the train was stopped the engine and ten cars had passed over the body. He at once sent word to the Coroner who took the remains in charge.
Other witnesses testified that the track rails at the crossing in question are higher than the sidewalk and it is supposed that the deceased stumbled and was stunned by the fall.
The Coroner's jury rendered a verdict of accidental death.

Obituary

ELLEN LEATHERS
Times and Gazette
November 23, 1889
Mrs. Ellen Leathers, one of the pioneers of the county died at her residence in this town on Monday last. Mrs. Leathers was the reelect of the late Peter Leathers to whom she was wedded in 1856 and who built and at one time owned two large buildings connected with Frank’s Tannery and used as store houses. She was well known and highly respected by all her acquaintances, a large number of which attended her body to her final resting-place, despite the inclement weather. Her family consists of three sons, Richard, Joseph, and Benjamin, and three daughters Mary, Martha, and Ella, to whom the sympathy of the community is extended. The interment took place yesterday at Union Cemetery where all that was mortal was laid beside the body of the partner of her joys and sorrows.
