          Obituary

ROBERT LOWRY, WAR VETERAN PASSES AWAY
Robert Lowry, a genial and kindly old gentleman who had made is home in this city for the past year, and who was esteemed by many, quietly passed away Monday morning after a brief illness. His death was sudden and unexpected, a most painful shock to his relatives and friends, Mr. Lowry , since his arrival in Redwood, has made his home with his devoted daughter, Miss Minnie Lowry, one of the teachers in the grammer school. A few days ago he was taken ill and the doctors diagnosed his ailment as heart weakness, due to his advanced years, but were of the opinion that he was in no immediate danger. During the latter days of last week he improved very much and seemed on the way to recovering his usual health. Sunday he was especally in good spirits and passed the evening pleasantly with a few friends. On Monday morning Miss Lowry, as was her custom since her father's illness brought him his breakfast while he was yet in bed. He was bright and cheerful and promised his daughter that he would arise when he finished his meal and come down stairs. Little dreaming that she would never see her father again in life Miss Lowry hurried away to school. An hour later she was summonded home to find him dead.
Dr. Taggart, who had attended Mr. Lowry during his illness was passing the home on Stambaugh street when something prompted him to call in to see the old gentleman. Failing to find him in his usual place the doctor went to Mr. Lowry's bedroom and found him apparently sleeping peacefully. He spoke to him and receiving no answer made a hasty examination and found that life was extinct, although the body was still warm, showing that Mr. Lowry had passed away but a few minutes before the doctor's arrival. Miss Lowry was summonded from school and on learning that her father was dead was almost prostrated with grief. Everything pointed to a quiet, painless death. Mr. Lowry had eaten his breakfast and evidently taken a second nap and while sleeping peacefuly passed into his last slumber.
Mr. Lowry was a native of Ohio, aged 74 years. When the Rebellion broke out he enlisted in the 41st Ohio regment, Company F, and served gallantly through the war, participating in most of the great battles. Once he was wounded and agian barely missed death through the explosion of a shell that caused deafness from which he never recovered.
When the war ended he was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant.
The deceased was reverently laid to rest Tuesday afternoon in the Grand Army plot in Union Cemetery, his pall bearers being fellow soldiers. Rev. C. C. Kirtland conducting a short service at the grave.
Mr. Lowry is survived by five daughters and two sons, all whom are residing out of California, except two daughters, Miss Lowry of this city and Mrs. H. E. Mootz of Stockton. His wife is visiting one of her sons in Oklahoma.

William C. Lund, a member of the Palo Alto Town Council and proprietor of the University stables, who committed suicide last month in San Francisco by shooting himself, was buried in Union Cemetery Wednesday. The funeral, which was well attended, was under the auspices of the San Mateo Lodge No. 158, F&AM.

For many years Mr. Lund was a gardener at the Hecht residence, Fair Oaks and for a time successfully conducted the Oak Grove Vilja at Menlo Park. Nearly three years ago he bought the University stables at Palo Alto and ran them profitably ever since. It is understood that he leaves insurance policies aggregating $12,000.
