BODY FOUND AT SAN PEDRO: Identified as William Mackey, a Sailor on the Beer
The remains of a man in a badly decomposed condition was found on the beach at Point San Pedro last Saturday. An inquest was held by Deputy Coroner Cunningham, after which the body was shipped to this city for burial, no evidence or marks having been found by which the deceased cound be identifed at the time.
Tuesday William F. Kingwell who resides at 237 Mississippi street, San Francisco, called on Coroner Crowe, having learned through the newspapers of finding the body, and identified the remains as those of his brother-in-law, William Mackey. The deceased had been a sailor on the revenue cutter Bear and met his death by accidental drowning April 24th. He was going on the vessel when he missed his step and fell overboard. The identification was fully established by portions of the clothing and the mending of the undergarments, which had been done by Mrs. Kingwell shortly before her brother met his death. Deceased was a native of England, aged 42 years. He was buried in Union Cemetery.

Obituary
"FRANK MADDOCKS BY ONE WHO KNEW HIM
Sketch of Francis Maddocks who recently suicided at La Honda:
"Frank" Maddocks, as he was always called by friends and aquaintences, came to the vicinity of Searsville and La Honda over 40 years ago and married there. A little later he lived with his family for a time in the mountains back of Saratoga. Then he returned to Searsville and resided on the mountain top between that place and La Honda until in the eighities he moved with his family to Boulder Creek. For many years, with his family, his home was on West Park avenue, at the place now owned by J. E. Bonebrake, on the west side of the street, this house having been built and owned by the deceased for a time.
The deceased resided in the locality about 20 years, during which time his wife died and the family of four children drifted out in the world. One son, Roy, had been in Alaska for many years. Another, Ellsworth, resides in San Francisco. A third son, Austin, died in Amador county of typhoid fever. The youngest of the family, Ethel, is teaching school in San Luis Obispo county, and is a member of the board of education of that county.
While living here Frank Maddocks never claimed to have "marched with Sherman to the sea". He was in the United States' service for about one year during the Rebellion but it was in the navy and not the army. For a time he saw service on the old, historic monitor, the "Monadnock". The story of "marching to the sea" was probably the creation of some resourceful and imaginative reporter.
The life of Frank Maddocks was ruined by an inordinate love of strong drink. It was his besetting passion through life, and took presedence of all other earthly ties or duties. His wife was worried and harried to a premature grave by it; his home and family wrecked and his children scattered early in life to the four winds.
Finally, we see him the above pen picture, estranged from his own children and other blood relatives, living by himself in a loney cabin and doubtless sinking lower and lower in the scale of humanity until a moment of frenzy or deperation, he takes his own life in the most dreadful manner possible. The end, while shocking in the extreme, was in keeping with the life, and there is no need to point a moral to the story. It is so obvious that it speaks loudly for itself.

Obituary
A HORRIBLE SUICIDE.
A. C. Madsen Ends His Existence with a Shotgun
On Friday afternoon last, March 25th, just after 1 o'clock, A. C. Madsen, who for the last fourteen or fifthteen years has kept the saloon known as the "Old Corner," on A and First streets, committed suicide in a most deliberate manner, as will appear from the testimony given before the Coroner's jury.
A. C. Madsen was a member of the A. O. U. W. and of the Odd Fellows. He was buried under the auspices of these two orders on Sunday afternoon. Deceased was a widower, his wife having died some five years since. Four children survive him, the eldest being fifthteen years of age. Mr. Madsen was in easy circumstances. He frequently complained of trouble in his head, and those who were closest to him say that he had been acting strangely of late.
The manner of his suicide was most shocking. After waiting upon a customer, he entered a back room of his saloon and removed the shoe and sock from his right foot, put the muzzle of a shotgun in his mouth and worked the trigger with his toe, blowing off his whole side of his face and head. Death must have been instantaneous. He was well liked by those who knew him best. It is also said that he was a kind parent. The inquest was held Saturday evening.
