Willard Peter Martin

Obituary

HIS LAST RESTING PLACE
Woodman Unveil Monument in the Memory of Departed Brother
Several hundred people witnessed the unveiling of a monument at Union Cemetery last Sunday by the Woodmen of the World to the memory of Willard P Martin who died in San Francisco a year ago.
The deceased was a member of the Golden Gate Camp and the monument which marks his last resting place was erected by the order in accordance with it's laws.
Sixty members of the Golden Gate Camp accompanied by a uniformed drill corp came down from San Francisco on the 12:40 train and were met at the depot by Embarcadero Camp and were escorted to the lodge room on Main Street where they partook in refreshments. At 2 o'clock they formed in procession escorted by the local camp and marched to the cemetery. The members of the order formed in the shape of a triangle about the grave and the ceremony of the unveiling took place. The burial service of the order was impressively read and the monument was exposed to view, disclosing a neat granite shaft suitably inscribed. Merton C. Allen, a San Francisco newspaper man, delivered an impressive address in which he portrayed the high character of the deceased and his thoughtfulness towards his family in thus providing for their needs in the event of death. His remarks, which were delivered with eloquence, were listened to with attention by the large number who stood at the grave. Two ladies who came down the city sang two musical selections during the service in a manner which added solemnity of the occasion.
The deceased was the son of N. H. Martin, the well known coastside resident, and the brother of Mrs. J. H. Mansfield. He left a wife who received an insurance of $3000 from the order of the Woodmen.

              ABRAHAM D. MATTHEWSON
              Redwood City Democrat
              January 8, 1903
Abraham D. Matthewson who has resided so long in San Mateo County as to have become one of it’s landmarks, passed away yesterday forenoon at the home of his niece, Mrs. Lottie Wilcox, after an illness from pneumonia of less than two days.
Mr. Matthewson was one of the few remaining old residents who came to this county during the pioneer days. He was born in Mass. 72 years ago and arrived here in the latter 50’s and worked in the redwoods as a shingle maker, which pursuit he followed for many years, retiring with enough of the world’s wealth to spend his days in comfort. He made his home in this city with Mrs. Wilcox for several years and by his simple, genial, and kindly nature had become a favorite with everyone. Even to the children he was known as “Uncle Abe” and by them will be as much missed as his more elder associates. Of his whole life ¡n San Mateo County, there can be naught said than that he was a good citizen and neighbor, honest and conscientious in all his dealings.
The deceased was never married. He leaves beside his niece in this city, a sister (Mrs. Packard) who resides in San Gregorio, and two nephews and a niece, children of the latter.
He is a brother of Mrs. Jumel and his headstone says “Uncle Abe”.
The date of the funeral could not be arranged last night on account of the inability of Mrs. Packard to hear from her daughter at Port Townsend, who may desire to attend the funeral.

                Obituary

                ANNIE MARIE MATHISON
                Redwood City Democrat
                January 16, 1896
Early on the morning of Monday, January 13, 1896, Mrs. Annie Marie Mathisen after a brief illness was sunmmoned to her long home. Her devoted husband, Mr. P. Mathisen, was constant and untiring in his attention and nothing was left undone by the family and friends to alleviate her suffering and soothe her last moments. Her malady was very unusual, occurring very rarely in the clogging of a blood vessel in the brain. Mrs. Mathisen was the mother of Mrs. J. A. Sorensen and of Peter, Willie, Ellen, and Christian Hansen, her children by a former marriage. She also leaves a little boy, Arthur, the issue of her marriage to P. Mathisen.
Deceased was a native of Denmark, aged 45 years 7 months and 17 days. She was an estimable woman of rare worth. She was a faithful and affectionate wife, a kind and indulgent mother and an amiable and considerate neighbor. In common with all, we extend sympathy to the bereaved husband and family.
The funeral took place from the family residence in Woodside yesterday and was widely attended. The interment was in Union Cemetery. Rev O.M. Hester conducted the funeral.
