              Obituary

              Robert McElwain
              By: John Edmonds

Robert McElwain was born and raised in New York, he enlisted in the 23rd New York Infantry on September 16, 1861, Company “E”. He was discharged from the unit on March 11th , 1863 in Baltimore, Maryland.
During the period of time that Robert was fighting for our country the 23rd New York Infantry was so badly shot up that they were combined into the 80th New York Volunteers. The unit suffered the loss of 2 officers and 70 enlisted men, 5 of whom died in the hands of the enemy.
Robert came to San Mateo County after the war but I was unable to find out much about his role in this county. He died at age 44 so he was not here very long. He may have suffered from wounds as many of the members of the Grand Army of the Republic did. He joined the Grand Army unit in Redwood City and participated in their activities as long as he could. Robert died on January 15, 1889. He was buried by the Grand Army, in their plot, in Union Cemetery in Redwood City, California.

                    Obituary

Patrick Henry McEvoy was born in Sidney, Australia on May 9th, 1848 and
migrated with his parents to California in the fall of 1849. After a six month sail aboard the ship “Monterey” they landed in San Francisco.
One year later they moved to the Carey Jones ranch, later known as the Horace Hawes ranch, now part of Greater Redwood City. From this place Patrick McEvoy attended the first school in Redwood City, a private one located on the northwest corner of what is now Dingee Park and finally
graduated from the old school building on the Island. He finished his education at Saint Mary’s college in San Francisco. As announced in the Redwood City Democrat, August 11,
1910. Patrick McEvoy somehow met Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lloyd in 1877 and one November 29, of that year he married her at the home of her father and mother in the town of Searsville. The service was conducted by Reverend H. K. Jewett and the supper was “A supper of grand triumph of gastronomy” as per the article in the Times-Gazette December 8, 1877.
Patrick and Elizabeth Lloyd McEvoy lived in Redwood City as Patrick served the County as a member of the Board of Supervisors. He started his political career in 1892 winning a close election; he ran a second time in 1896 and again won by a narrow margin. Patrick lost the election in 1900 but in 1904 he ran and won the largest margin of votes in San Mateo County history.
Patrick and Elizabeth moved from Redwood City to Menlo Park in 1920 and
were residing there when they began considering a move to Oakland.
