CRUSHED BY A ROLLING PIPE
A Coroner's jury was summoned by County Coroner James Crowe to inquire into the death of a person supposed to be John Menger, killed a Sawyer's Camp, in this county, on Oct. 6th.
A verdict of accidental death was rendered by the jury, in accordence with the testimoney of Gus Schroder, an employee at Sawyer's Camp of the Spring Valley Water Company, who said that on the morning of October 6th a large water pipe was being lowered down the hill, about four men working in front and four behind, when three pipes gave way together and started to roll. The deceased came running up with a piece of 4x4 timber and tried to stop the pipe from rolling. As soon as the pipe struck the stick the pressure pulled him down and the pipe rolled over him. When picked up the deceased was unconscious, and died shortly afterward, although a doctor was immediately sent for and everything possible by way of assistance was done. Deceased was 45 years of age, known only by the name of John but supposed to John Menger, a native of Germany.

Obituary
ARTHUR MERRILL
Redwood City Democrat
March 5, 1914
Clarence Merrill. postmaster of Berkeley, was in this city Tuesday, and arranged with T. C. Rice to prepare a concrete base and erect a stone in memory of his brother Arthur, who died recently in Los Angeles. The two men were the only children of S.S. Merrill, the pioneer druggist of this city and at one time county treasurer, who, with his wife, lies in Union Cemetery. Arthur, the oldest of the sons, desired to be buried with his parents and in 1909, had a stone prepared, and carved with his name, etc. leaving a blank space for the date of his death. This stone was stored away until his death, when a letter prepared for this event was opened and found to contain directions for his burial and the disposition of his remains. In conformity with these wishes of his brother, Clarence visited the scenes of his boyhood for the first time in many years.

Obituary
We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Merrill, wife of Mr. S. S. Merrill, the worthy druggist and Postmaster of Berkeley. Mrs. Merrill appeared to be in pretty good health and to all appearences looked as if she would live many years longer. A few days before her death she contracted a cold of a neuralgiac character, which caused much pain and nervousness, this somewhat subsided and death soon followed, caused by heart disease.
