Obituary
The funeral of S. S. Merrill took place yesterday afternoon from the residence of his son, Clarence Merrill of Bancroft way. Mr. Merrill came to Berkeley about fourteen years ago from Redwood City, where he was postmaster and also proprietor of a hotel. He was appointed by General U. S. Grant the first postmaster for the town of Berkeley in the year 1876, the United States mail up to that time having been received and distributed at the State University.
Mr. Merrill held the office until long after Grover Cleveland became President of the United States. He was succeeded by the present incumbent, Mr. Byrne. He retired from public life in 1887, since which time he has been an invalid. Mr. Merrill held the office of postmaster with great credit to himself and satisfaction to the community. In office he was characterized for great fairness and urbanity, dealing out justice on every hand regardless of state of standing. In politics, as in everything else, he was a man of decided and unwavering principle.
As in public, his private life was marked by the same exactness and purit, having everywhere, through a remarkably long public and social career, a stainless record. His fondness for home has given great opportunities for mental culture, and his long term of official life gave him unlimited facilites for observing human nature. He was an accomplished and successful physican, adding luster and respectability to his profession; an energenic and valuable business man, and was remembered as a worthy and exemplary Christian. Dr. Merrill was one of the most virtuous generaous and useful men Berkeley ever had; and probably no man in this community ever died more regretted.

According to the American House Hotel historical marker on Broadway and Main in Redwood City: "The American Hotel burned down in 1864. Sidney Merrill, local druggist, postmaster, and Redwood City’s first tax collector, purchased the site for a new three-story hotel completed in 1867, calling it the American House. This hotel burned in 1878"
Husband of Prudence, father to Arthur and Howard
