      Obituary

The Evening Times (Washington, D.C.) September 7, 1896
San Francisco, Sept. 7.—Salvador Romero and Mrs. Rena Garcia, residents of Redwood City, were found dead in each other’s arms last night in a room which they had engaged at a cheap lodging house on Saturday evening.
The man had shot his companion through the heart and then sent a bullet through his own.
A number of notes written to the friends of the dead couple were found in the room. The missives showed that love and despair were responsible for the tragedy, which had been carefully planned by both lovers.

                    Obituary

Charles Ross, who was arrested recently in San Francisco on suspicion of having something to do with the incendairy fires that were started in three of the big boats at the plant of the Alaska Codfish Company in this city on March 16th last, died suddenly in his cell at the county jail on Webster street sometime during Friday night. An autopsy performed by Dr. J. E. Chapin at the parlors of the Redwood City Undertaking Company showed that death was due to heart trouble.
Prisoners at the jail Saturday morning reported to Jailer James P. Coleman that Ross had failed to show up for breakfast. An investigation followed and the prisoner was found stretched across the floor of his cell, dead. His recent incarceration here, which resulted in his death, marked the end of a checkered career, which, according to Ross' own statement, led in and out of many jail doors.
Ross was up to about a month ago employed at the local plant of the Alaska Codfish Company. He became intoxicated one day and was discharged by Superintendent J. J. Hahir. Early in the morning of March 16th, fire was discovered simultaneously on three of the company's boats that were anchored in the channel alongside the plant. The firest on two of the boats were quickly extinquished with the use of the company's fire apparatus, but on the third vessel the flames had made such headway that it was not until several fire boats had come down from San Francisco that the ship was saved from entire destruction. The damage to the three vessels, according to Superintendent Hahir, was in the neighborhood of $12,000.
Suspicion fell upon Ross as to knowledge of the cause of the fire and he was arrested in San Francisco on a warrant sworn out by Superintendent Hahir. He was arraigned on the charge by Justice of the Peace Ray Griffin and was awaiting his preliminary hearing.
