Charles Mon San, better known as China Charley died at his home here Thursday after a lingering illness caused by consumption. The deceased was a native of California, aged 58 years. He had resided in Redwood City for nearly forty years and was well liked and respected. His mother was a Chinese woman and his father a native of Italy. Charlie did not associate with or recognize the little brown men. Many years ago he followed the occupation of a market hunter and shot ducks and geese on the local marshes, every inch of which was familiar to him. Of late years, he had been employed in the Frank's Tannery. He was an industrious, good-natured man well liked and respected by his companions. The funeral took place from Crowe's undertaking parlor yesterday afternoon. Interment was in Union Cemetery. Shortly before his death, he made a will bequeathing his entire estate, valued at about $1100.00 to Louis and George Genochio in equal shares. These young men were his friends and administered to his every want during his last days.

Obituary
David Winslow Sampson was the patriarch of the Sampson family his brother George Lyman Sampson, who was six years younger, was a close second patriarch. There was also a cousin, William A. Sampson who came to Redwood City at the same time.
David and George came to Redwood City in 1880 from their native Maine. David was married to Elizabeth White and was affectionately known as “Lizzie.” They built their home at 503 Bradford Street in Redwood City.
The brothers had originally come to San Mateo County in the early 1850s and settled first at Searsville. They established on the upper branch of Corte Madera Creek near Dark Hollow in 1857. Sampson took 160 acres from the Federal Government. They were primarily making shingles and probably coordinated their product with Sheldon Purdy Pharis who was undoubtedly the King of shingle production and at one time was the largest employer in San Mateo County.

Obituary
GEORGE L SAMPSON
Redwood City Democrat
October 24, 1901
George Lyman Sampson passed away at his home on Second Street Tuesday afternoon after a painful intestinal illness of two weeks. His death was a shock to the community as it was generally supposed that he would recover. Mr Sampson had been identified with San Mateo County ever since its organization. He was one of the pioneers, and while his life was uneventful, his personality was such that his absence from his accustomed walks of life will create a void, which will long be unfilled. Mr. Sampson was of genial disposition, kind hearted and popular, and his passing out of life has caused expressions of sorrow throughout the community. He came to this state in 1854 from his birth place in Maine and located at Woodside where he engaged in the lumber business, a calling of which he followed up to the present time, being associated with his brother David. In 1875, he married in San Francisco and has since resided in this city where he had established a comfortable home. He was aged 71 years, and leaves only his wife and brother David to mourn his loss. Mr. Sampson was an ardent Republican and an active worker in its ranks, tho he never sought or filled a political office. He belonged to the San Mateo County Pioneers in which he was much interested. The funeral will take place this afternoon from his home, where he will be laid to rest in Union Cemetery.
