Obituary
William was a cousin of David and George Sampson; he was born in Leeds, Maine and ended up in Redwood City. The earliest record I could find on William is a certificate he received from a course of lessons in Practical and Ornamental Penmanship, Pen-Drawing, Book-keeping and card-making. William came to California with David and George Sampson however he did not go into the hills and cut lumber.
Before coming to California William worked in the oil cloth business in New York City. He worked in San Francisco running the Golden Gate Flour Mills. He traveled back to the east settling briefly in Washington DC then on to
Minneapolis, Minnesota for several years, then back to Redwood City, primarily for health reasons. William married, someone called M. McS. Who died on February 25th 1889 and was buried in plot 48L in Union Cemetery. William died in San Francisco on July 25th 1891 and was brought back to Redwood City and buried beside his wife in plot 48L on that date.

Obituary
Another Pioneer's Death
-------
Ambrose Saunders Follows his Brother to the Grave
-------
At 1 o'clock this morning, at his residence on the Alameda, Ambrose Saunders died, aged 60 years and 11 days.
About ten or eleven days ago his brother, Joshua N. Saunders, died suddenly at Redwood City, of apoplexy. Ambrose was in the Santa Cruz mountains at the time, looking after his and his brother's lumber interests. News of his brother's death was carried to him and he hastened to Redwood City.
The shock of this bereavement told upon him and almost prostrated him. He bore up until the funeral was over, and then in the meantime contracted a severe cold. He came at once to his home on the Alameda arriving a week ago last Wednesday, and took to his bed. He went out, however, the next day and came down town where he was suddenly taken with a hard chill. He was carried home, and steadily grew worse, pneumonia having developed. He said from the first that he knew the attack would end his life. He died resignedly. He leaves a wife and three young children. The funeral will be held at the residence at 11:30 o'clock, Sunday morning, in time for the train to Redwood City, where his remains will be interred. Mr. Saunders was born in Dedham, Hancock Co., Maine, and at first engaged in mining. He remained in this but a short time, and then came to this part of the state and entered in the lumber milling business in the Santa Cruz mountains, where he and his brother operated together. They did an extensive business, and in all of their relations were strictly just and upright. Ambrose Saunders will be missed by a large circle of friends. He was a man among men and earned the high reputation he bore.
