Obituary
Death of Well Known Citizen
MAYFIELD, April 2 - John A. Shepard, a well known carpenter of this place, died at his home at the corner of Second and Sherman streets at 2:30 Tuesday morning, his illness being a complication of diseases and extending over a period of five months.
Mr. Shepard was a native of Missouri, aged 42 years. He had been a resident of this coast since 1865 and came here from Santa Clara three years ago. Sixteen years ago at Full River valley, in Shasta county, he married the wife who survives him, and six children of tender years are now bereft of a loving father. He was a member of the carpenter's union of Palo Alto, and they have stood by him and his family loyally and as brothers during his long illness, and with more customary fraternal spirit. The union secured a contract in his name to build a residence for E. J. Lawler at the Terrace and although Mr. Shepard was able to partially lay out the work, he become too ill to continue it further, so the "boys" took it up and carried it through to completion and gave him the proceeds of the contract. The union has also complete charge of the last service to their brother which is a great comfort to the widow in her sorrow.
Mr. Shepard was a a most skillful workman, especially on inside finishing work, but had too slight a physique to do heavy framing and lifting, which he attempted to do when he first came here and which was the cause of impairing his health. He was a loving husband and father, a conscientious and energetic citizen.
The funeral took place this (Thursday) morning at 10 o'clock, the carpenter's union attending in a body. After a short service at the family residence, private conveyances were taken by those whose desired to accompany the remains to Redwood City, where the interment was made in Union Cemetery.
Besides his family he leaves a brother, William Shepard, and a sister, Miss Belle Shepard, both of San Francisco. D. F. Clark, the father of Mrs. Shepard, also came from San Francisco to join the sorrowing bereaved ones.

Obituary
ELMER JAMES SHERMANTINE
Redwood City Democrat
January 16, 1908
Death is a sad visitation at all times, even when it takes away the aged whose allotted years have been granted, but when it comes to claim the youth at the very thresh hold of life, in the happiest period of existence, it is inexpressibly sad. Last Friday. Elmer James Shermantine, the youngest son of John Shermantine of this city, passed away at Oakland after a brief illness of typhoid fever. The young man, while a native of Santa Clara County, spent the greater portion of his life in this city. He graduated from the grammar school and entered the high school, but after two years work in that institution, he gave up his studies to enter the employ of the United Gas and Electric Company and for the past two years has been one of the faithful workers for the corporation.
His body was brought to this city Monday for interment. At the depot, it was met by many of the former schoolmates of the deceased, accompanied by a delegation from the Rebeccah Lodge and escorted to the Congregational Church where services were conducted by Rev. C.C. Kirkland. The burial took place at Union Cemetery. Elmer Shermantine is spoken of his friends and former schoolmates as a bright young man whose lovable character endured him to all, He was industrious, attentive to his work and commanded the respect of his employers. The deceased was 21 years and 8 months. Besides his father, he leaves two brothers, Howard and Harry, and a sister, Alice, to mourn his loss, The surviving relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
