Peter Vanetti
Foully Murdered
This was the sub heading of an article in the Redwood City Democrat
Newspaper on April 6, 1893.
The dead body of Peter Vanetti was found on Saturday by one of the searching party in the gulch about a hundred yards from where he was shot by an assassin. He had three bullet holes in his body. One shot entered behind his ear, another in his breast and a third in his leg. Beside this his skull was crushed gashes in his breast and leg, evidently made by a hatchet. It was found that after taking up this bush it was easy to follow the course over which the body had been dragged to the point where it was found.
It transpires that it was known that Vanetti, after losing money by the failure of the French Bank, constantly carried with him money in the same sack that he carried implements to repair the flume – he been a flume walker and in charge of the Pilarcitos Dam for the Spring Valley Water Works. He would roll the money belt in a bundle and put it in the sack with nails and hammer laying it down and picking it up as occasion required as he proceeded about his labors.
Several clues are being followed. It is believed that however committed this
murder was aware of Vanetti’s habits. The murdered man is supposed to have had with him when murdered from $5,000 to $7,000 in gold, also two gold chains, one made of nuggets which he dug from mines in Sierra County where he formally lived, also valuable finger rings. The murdered man was buried Monday in Union Cemetery
