Obituary

CAUSED BY A FALSE LOVER
A sensational suicide occured at Redwood, Cal., on the 5th inst. The night before Louise Esslinger, aged twenty-two was married to George Wehrlin at the residence of C. Groner, her uncle. The wedding was attended by a large number of friends. At 4 o'clock she and her husband went to their residence. She refused to allow him to enter her room, and he was compelled to return to the residence of Mr. Groner to pass the remainder of the night. On again entering his house at 6 o'clock he found his wife lying dead in bed. In the bed were the grains of a crystal substance, the nature of which had not been determined. She left no letter of explanation. Mrs. Wehrlin had been in Redwood City six weeks, and was engaged to Wehrlin only four weeks. It is conjectured that a former lover in Portland, Or. , proved false to her.

    JOSEPH WEICHER
    Redwood City Democrat
    November 30, 1905

Joseph Weicher, the barkeeper at the “OK” Saloon, while temporarily insane, jumped from the second story of the Del Monte Hotel shortly after midnight Tuesday and was painfully injured. Weicher has been drinking heavily for several months and began to act queerly. Tuesday he was put to bed and given a quieting draught. During the night he was aster and talking excitedly to imaginary intruders and waked Mr. Luscher, who was in the act of going to his room to quiet him, when he threw up his window and sprang out, falling in the small alley along side the building.
When Weicher struck the ground, he set up an outcry that aroused the inmates of the hotel and attracted the attention of Watchman Coleman who was near by. Help was quickly at hand and he was carried back to his room and Dr. Ross was called to attend him. It is thought that the unfortunate man, who is quite heavy, suffered internal injuries.
Weicher has been a resident for about four years. He is a tanner by trade but has not worked for the past few months. He has an income from mining and mortgage investments.

              CHARLES O. WENTWORTH
              Redwood City Democrat
              April 22, 1909
Pathetic in the extreme is the untimely passing away of Charles O. Wentworth which occurred Tuesday afternoon. The deceased had been ill but a few days. On the morning of Tuesday while in a delirium, he eluded the vigilance of those who were caring for him and left his room. When he reached the sidewalk he fell and injured his skull thus hastening his death.
The deceased was the son of Sarah A. and the late George Wentworth, a native of Redwood City, 43 years of age. For the past two years he had charge of the rural mail service out of this city and performed his duties faithfully at all times regardless of season or weather conditions
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2:30. Services will be conducted at the family home on C Street by Rev. C.C. Kirtland after which the Masons will take charge and officiate at the burial in Union Cemetery.

                Obituary

San Mateo Times Thursday October 25, 1923
                Sad Passing of Mrs. Wentworth
The funeral of Mrs. Charlotte A. Wentworth, whose sudden passing last Friday afternoon was the cause of widespread sorrow throughout the city, was held Monday afternoon from the First Congregational Church Rev. C. H. Stevens of Lodi, former pastor of the local church, conducted the services, which were attended by hundreds of friends of the bereaved family. A choir consisting of Mrs. C. H. Stevens, Miss Kittie Crowe, Mr. Wilbur Doxsee and Mr. Otis M. Carrington, with Miss Clarissa Dodge at the organ, rendered "Some Day We'll Understand", and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", and Mr. Carrington sang "Happy Elysis." Banked about the casket were hundreds of beautiful floral offerings sent by sorrowing relatives and friends.
Following the service the funeral cortege proceeded to Union Cemetery, where interment took place in the family plot.
Mrs. Wentworth had been ill at her home, 706 Arguello St., for about two weeks. Her condition was not regarded as serious and she was taken to the Hulings Hospital Friday morning for what was considered a minor operation. She failed to rally after the operation, however, and passed away about four o'clock Friday afternoon. Her death was a great shock to her family and to her many friends here and throughout the Peninsula.
Mrs. Wentworth was born in Redwood City and was one of the most prominent women of the community. She was exceptionally talented, with a pleasing soprano voice that had been often heard in social and benefit affairs in the city. She had been active for many years in church circles and was a member of the choir of the First Congregational Church. She also belonged to the Redwood City Woman's Club.
She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, Frank P. Wentworth, three sons, George C., John R. and F. DeAlton Wentworth, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Christ, former pioneer residents of this city and now making their home at Cloverdale, Calif., two sisters. Mrs. L. D. Rathbone of Cloverdal and Mrs. Harry Brace of San Francisco and one brother, George Christ of this city.

                  Obituary

George left New Hampshire and came to California at the age of 19. He came to work as a cattle herder for Miller and Lux, after which he went into the stock raising business on the Dennis Martin place. He worked a butchering for JQA Tilton, and afterwards for John Hancock at the same business in Redwood city. In the early 1860's he purchased interest in the Pioneer Livery stables, which he conducted from time to time until 1875, when he engaged in farming and running a Tannery. He was a very prosperous businessman in Redwood city, until his sudden death in 1888.
July 24, 1869 at a special election held at the Pulgas township, San Mateo county, to fill a unexpired term of SH Snyder, George defeated J. Crowley and RG Sneath for the office of supervisor. Sept 1, 1869, George was elected Supervisor from Woodside. He was also very active in the Redwood city Fire dept. Donated the land for the first building. Was treasurer for a number of years. George's ranch faced the northerly side of Woodside road, about 1 mile westerly from El Camino Real. Woodside Plaza now occupies this land.
