      Obituary

      Times-Gazette, Redwood City, Friday March 31, 1933

The last rites for William A. Clark, a former resident of Redwood City, were held at the chapel of the James Crowe Company Wednesday afternoon. The body arrived from San Diego the day before. Mr. Clark passed away last Monday at the ripe old age of 104 years. The remains were interred in the family plot in Union Cemetery.
Mr. Clark came to Redwood City in 1856 and lived here for 27 years in the seventies he was a constable for many years and was the first auctioneer in the county. He went to San Diego, then a small village, in 1883. He became a prominent citizen of the southern town. He served several terms as a justice of the peace and a constable and other positions of honor.
Clark knew Abraham Lincoln intimately, when he was known as Abe the Lawyer.

At the funeral services on Wednesday there were only five residents of the city present who knew the aged man when he resided here. They were H. W. Schaberg, D. E. O'Keefe, Asa Hull, Mrs. Lila Kirkpatrick and Maurice Woodhams.

Clark married Rebecca Teague, of an old pioneer San Mateo county family, here in 1858. he had settled here about two years before, after crossing the plains from Spingfield, Ill., in 1853. Miss Teague was the daughter of Andrew and Permelia Teague; Mrs. Clark died in 1880 and in 1883 Clark moved to San Diego. He has resided there since. Blind and feeble at the end, Clark never the less had a clear memory of his youth in Springfield, Ill., the AP reports. He was a clerk in a grocery where Lincoln came in evenings from time to time. On his 100th birthday Clark told of a party he attended in Springfield many years ago:
"Abe Lincoln was there, and Ann Rutledge and several other young people. We played music and games. I could not help but notice that Abe paid particular attention to Ann, although his actions were those of a very bashful country boy."
"Clark was born at Fancy Creek, 10 miles from Springfield, Ill. he is survived by a son, George W. Clark of Oakland, and Mrs. John W. Herd of Bakerfield, A daughter."

              Untimely death of George Cloud.

Passed away in Washington, Nevada County, last Thursday. George E. Cloud, whose serious illness was announced in this paper last week, is dead.

He passed away at his home Thursday morning.

The deceased was a native of Half Moon Bay, aged 44 years, where his younger days were passed, He was the son of the late J.J. Cloud, the stepson of Mrs. Cloud, and brother of Roy Cloud of this city and Charles Cloud of Nevada City for several years Mr. Cloud has been a resident of Nevada County, where he was highly esteemed. He served two terms as Justice of the Peace and was prominently spoken of as a future candidate for the Assembly. A feature of sadness in connection with his death is the fact that a few weeks ago he was happily married to an estimable young lady of Washington, who, though hardly more than a bride, is plunged into the grief of widowhood.

The remains arrived in this city Saturday afternoon and the following day at 2 o'clock the funeral took place from the Congregational Church, Rev. L.H. Maar officiating. The church was thronged with friends of the deceased and his family and many beautiful floral offerings bespoke the sympathy that was manifested toward the sorrowing relatives. The burial took place in Union Cemetery, the following old friends of the deceased serving as pallbearers: J.L. Johnston, Claude Fox, F.H. Thorpe, Joseph Winter, Fred Glennan and Will Lovie.

The young wife of the deceased will remain several weeks with her husband's relatives in this city.
