LOCAL PIONEER DROWNED IN CREEK
Antone ("Louie") DeBenedetti, for over 50 years a resident of Redwood City, was found dead in the creek in the rear of the Hotel de Redwood Tuesday morning. Death by drowning was the verdict of the coroner's jury at the inquest of conducted by County Coroner W. A. Brooke at the Jas. Crowe Undertaking parlors yesterday. The body was found by A. Bertolucci, proprietor of the Hotel de Redwood, about 6 o'clock in the morning, and was partly submerged in water. Dr. J. L. Ross, who examined the body at the undertaking parlors, gave his opinion at the inquest that death was caused by drowning.
DeBenedetti was last seen alive Monday night when he had supper at the hotel. He had been sleeping in the annex to the hotel, which borders on the creek. It is believed that in going to his room he accidently stumbled and fell into the creek bed.
The deceased was a native of Italy and was about 70 years of age. He has a son, Steve DeBenedetti, who resides in Benicia. For many years DeBenedetti had been employeed as a drive for the Redwood City Vegetable gardens. The gardens were located north of Arguello street, on what is now the Lenoit track. DeBenedetti was a familiar figure on the streets of Redwood in the early days and will be remembered by many of the younger generation of that time who are now grown to manhood and womanhood.
