Obituary
Lewis M. Fletcher
26th Maine Infantry
Lewis Fletcher was born in 1842 to William and Sarah Fletcher in Starks, Maine. The family was still in that area during the 1850 census. Lewis enlisted in the 26th Maine Infantry on October 11, 1861 and the unit was sent to Washington D.C. first and then to Newport News, Virginia. After a period of time at Newport the unit was shipped out and down to New Orleans. They spent the rest of their enlistment in the south. We do know how many men were in the original unit largely because when the unit got to the south they were combined with several other units into one large unit. The mortality of the unit was 200 dead. Lewis was not one of those however. Lewis was honorably mustered out. He was a private when he went in and a private when he got out. His apparent position in the 26th Maine Infantry was that of a musician.
The Fletcher family traveled west and ended up in San Francisco. Here he joined the Grand Army of the Republic, George S. Evans unit #72 in Redwood City and it was under this organization that services were held and he was buried in the GAR plot in Union Cemetery.

Obituary
San Francisco Chronicle May 2, 1889: Captain Reuben T. Fogg of Redwood City came to San Francisco yesterday as was his wont, and about noon visited the Post Office. While in the money order office he suddenly fell to the floor and expired. Captain Fogg was an old timer and for many years he carried on a private express business between this city and Redwood City, going back and forth every day on the train. Heart disease is supposed to have been the cause of his death.”
The Redwood City Times-Gazette noted on May 4, 1889 that “Reuben Towle Fogg was born in Manchester, New Hampshire and had grown to manhood in his native town where he was very popular and was at one time captain of a militia company. He immigrated to California early in the fifties and took up his residence in Redwood City where he arrived in 1854. When the railroad opened he was appointed agent for Truman & Co’s express which office he held until they sold out to Wells Fargo & Company. He then started the parcel delivery and express business between Redwood City and San Francisco and continued it up to the day of his death, a period of twenty years without missing a single day with the exception of the time taken for (He married Miss Annie F. Magarey on August 14, 1875)
