Obituary
An inquest was held today into the death of John W. Hudson, 60, a teamster, who died in the Community Hospital in Beresford last night following amputation of his right leg which was crushed when a truck became out of control in San Carlos on Wednesday. "Accidental death" was the verdict of the coroner's jury.
According to the testimony of Thomas Price, superintendent, Hudson had been riding on his truck. Traveling down a steep hill. Price asked Hudson to keep his hand on a gear shift to prevent its slipping. Rounding a sharp curve, Hudson was thrown forward against the windshield. Instantly, the truck was out of control when he released his hold.
Hudson had been in the employ of the Municipal Properties Company of San Carlos, developers of the Devonshire Hills for just three days before the fatal accident occurred.
Priced called to Hudson and Jesse Ham, who was riding the rear of the truck to jump and leaped himself. Hudson fell beneath the truck and incurred a crushed right leg.
He was rushed to the Community Hospital, where Dr. J. J. Null of San Carlos dressed the wound. Gangrene set in the next morning and Dr. Null called Dr. A. L. Offield, medical superintendent of the hospital, into consultation.
Both agreed that amputation of the leg was necessary to check the flow of poison. They notified the insurance company of San Francisco which carried the man's policy and were asked to delay the operation until the arrival of the company's physician.
Three hours later Hudson's leg was amputated and he died shortly after. The consulting physician did not say whether or not the man's life could of been saved by immediate amputation of his leg.
Funeral services are being temporarily withheld as little is known of the deceased's relatives. Hudson resided in Palo Alto and previously had resided in San Jose.
A letter was found among his effects from his wife, dated two years previous, but it failed to give her name or address.
