    KILLED BY THE CARS
    P. A. Logan, of Menlo Park, Run Over Monday Night
At a late hour last Monday night, while entering the station at Menlo Park, the engineer of freight train No. 33, saw an object lying on the track a few feet from the front of the engine. It was too short a distance to admit of stopping, and the train passed over it. Investigation showed that the object was the body of Peter A. Logan, whose body of frightfully crushed. One leg had been run over close up to the body, and the other below the knee, while there were several contusions about the head. The injured man was brought to Redwood by the train coming north, which was then at the station, where he received medical attention from Drs. Ross and Barrett. It was apparent, however, that no efforts could save him and he died while being treated.
Deceased was quite well known in Mayfield, Mountain View and Menlo Park. At the latter place, he had been living in a small cabin owned by Wm. Headley. On the night in question he had been drinking heavily, and it is the theory that fell and went to sleep on the track. From letters found in his possession Cororner James Crowe ascertained that Logan was well connected, having friends in Glasgow, Scotland, and in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. Receipts among his effects showed that he had been a frequent contributor to the Presbyterian Churches at Menlo Park and Mountain View. He had no relatives in this State and was without means. The Cororner's jury found that the deceased's name was Peter A. Logan, a native of Scotland, aged about 32 years, and that he came to his death by being run over by freight train No. 33, at Menlo Park.

          Obituary

"Long Bill" has at last left Menlo Park. Death has succeeded in luring the tall old man from the town to which he ran away as a boy and which he lever left during 50 years.
Funeral services were held yesterday for William Long, 67, who died Sunday night at the Community Hospital in Beresford after a few days illness. His trip to the hospital, where he was taken in a critical condition, was his first and last journey away from the home of his adoption.
Long, said to a member of a good family in San Francisco, ran away from home at 12 years of age, choosing Menlo Park as his place of residence. Parental threats and pleadings, acording to tradition, failed to persuade him to leave it, and he remained there from that day until his last illness.
He is said to be well educated in a self-taught way. He worked occasionally as a laborer and was one of the accepted characters of Menlo Park.

              WHY THOMASO LOPEZ DIED
He Drank Much Strong Liquor and Imagined Queer Things
Thomaso Lopez, the Mexican who strangled himself in the county jail last week, was guilty of no other crime than his own murder, it being shown without doubt that is was not he who took the life of little Robert Hilsop in San Francisco. Lopez was a hard drinker and when in the nervous condition that usally follows a spree he imagined all kinds of queer things and talked in a erratic manner.
His body remained at the morgue until Saturday and being unclaimed was buried on that day by Mr. Crowe at publi c expense. An inquest was held in the office of Justice Hannon Tuesday and the facts in connection with the death of Lopez investigated by the cornorer. None of the relatives of the deceased were present, but a letter written by a friend in San Francisco, a tamale-maker, by whom the dead man was occasionally employed, threw some light on the circumstances surrounding his death. The writer states that the wife of Lopez is without means and lives on the charity of friends. She was unable to respond to a subpoena to attend the inquest or to be in any way indentified with the disposition of her husband's body. The conclusion of the letter is as follows:
"Thomaso Lopez has been a heavy drinker, but at times he could stay away from liquor for a year or more. Now for weeks he has been drinking very much. Friday and Saturday, the 24th and 25th of May, he helped me to make tamales from 5 in the morning till noontime, and then, although he was not drunk, it looked on Saturday as if he was the verge of delirium tremens. He was arrested Saturday night and let out of jail Sunday, so I heard. As I have known Thomaso and his woman for years, I thought I would mention these circumstances. If there is any other information you wish I will give it with pleasure. Respectfully, H. Palmen, 134 Pinckley Place
