Obituary
William Royston, aged 60 years, who up to a few days ago had been employed in construction work on the State highway between Redwood and Beresford, was instantly killed early Monday afternoon when he was struck and run over by an automoble driven by Mrs. Harry E. Hallett of this city on the highway just north of the Finger bridge.
The accident occurred when Royston stepped from behind another machine and directly in the path of the Hallett car. Mrs. Hallett did not see the unfortunate man until she was within four or five of him and when it was too late to turn out and attempt to avoid hitting him. The coroner's jury at the inquest held by Dr. W. A. Brooks Tuesday morning held the accident to be unavoidable and completely exonerated the driver of all blame. Mrs. Hallett and her husband, who is one of the owners of the Portola Market on Broadway, were on their way to San Mateo at the time.
According to the testimony at the inquest, Royston had been laid off on Friday and with Mrs. Clara Stanley, a foster daughter, had come down from their home in San Francisco to get his pay. They met R. L. Bates, the foreman in charge of the work at San Carlos who took the couple in his car to find the time keeper, K. E. Hosier. They met the latter who was riding with the engineer in charge, George W. Wade, just north of the Finger bridge. The two cars stopped on opposite sides of the highway and Royston stepped out of Bates car and across the highway behind Wade's machine. After receiving his pay check form Hosier, he started to return to Bate's car talking to Wade and Hosier at the same time. Apparently he did not see the Hallett car coming from the south and stepped directly in its path. The bumper struck him and knocked him to the pavement, the wheels of the heavy machine then passing over his body. Death was instantaneous. The body was taken in charge by Deputy Coroner J. E. Layng and removed to the parlors of the Redwood City Undertaking Parlors.
Royston was unmarried and had been making his home with Mrs. Stanley at 594 Valencia street, San Francisco. The latter's parents died when she was a baby and Royston took care of her until she grew up, and continued to make his home with her following the accidental death of her husband in a mine some years ago.
