Obituary
Found caught in a barbed wire fence beside the Canada road, west of Redwood City, the body of Anton Wagenbauer, a Los Altos ranch hand, presented San Mateo county authorities with a death mystery today.
Wagenbauer is believed to have been partially overcome by carbon monoxide fumes from his tightly closed coupe. Before collapsing, he turned off the motor and stagged down the road before falling across the fence.
Deputy Sheriff C. A. Callaghan expressed the opinion that the man may also have taken poison. An autopsy to determine the cause death will clear up this question, Callaghan said.
The body was found by James T. Benard of the Gilman Dariy at 8:40 o'clock Sunday morning. It was found 400 feet south of a quarry, between West Union and Woodside. Nearby stood a car registered to Albert L. Haberl, 78 North Delaware street. San Mateo.
The windows of the coupe were closed. The mat was raised. The floor boards were sawed out, and about 14 inches of the exhaust pipe had been cut off. The pipe also had been disconnected.
Wagenbauer, while waiting for the fumes to take his life, evidently lay back on a blue army blanket. But before death came, it is believed he shut off the engine, left the car and went down the road 400 feet from the quarry. He destination could not be determined.
Wagenbauer had $240,000 coming from the British government for confiscating his lands and cattle in Australia during the World War because of pro-German feelings. Unless this was paid before he was 50, Wagenbauer said that he "might as well die".
A mother in Switzerland is belived to survive him.
The body was removed to the James Crowe Company chapel in Redwood City.

Obituary
Son of Roswell Walker.
Eugene Walker, an old and well-known citizen of the county and village of San Mateo, died at his home at 6:30 P. M. last Saturday evening, of quick consumption. He leaves a widow, and two children, two sisters and one brother, Sylvester Walker of Redwood City. The following account of Mr. Walker's life is taken from Alley's recently-published "History of San Mateo County": "Mr. Walker, who is one of the pioneers of San Mateo County, was born in Chatauqua [sic] County, New York, April 13, 1829. At the age of sixteen years he moved to the state of Pennsylvania, where he was engaged In boating on the Allegheny and Ohio rivers, remaining until he came to California via the Isthmus, in 1857. He settled first at West Union, in this county, and resided there until 1858, when be moved moved [sic] to Pescadero. His first wife rests from the toll, care and sorrow of this world, beneath a little mound of earth, a short distance from the village of Pescadero. Mr. Walker lived in Pescadero until 1861, when he engaged in the business of freighting in Nevada for James G. Fair, Whipple and Treadwell. He followed this business eight months, and then accepted a position with the S. P. R. R. He was afterwards employed on the ranch of Geo. H. Howaad, and October 6, 1864, he settled in San Mateo where he has since lived, being the first proprietor of the San Mateo Hotel. He has held the position of deputy sheriff, and is well known throughout the county. The name of his first wife was Mary Whipple, a native of Vermont, and the issue of this marriage was a son, John H. His second wife was Margaret Smith and they have one daughter, Clara Agnes." Obituary
The terrible tragedy at Arroyo Grande on the 31st ult., is still the subject of comment. The unfortunate victim of the assassin has been borne to his late home, and his widow, thought at the date or our last issue to be dead, still hovers between life and death. The shooting appears to have been done by Julius Hemmi under the direction of his father, and that George Geise, a nephew was in the company. Peter Hemmi had previously threatened the life of Walker, and had been placed under bonds to keep the peace. The locality of the murder was four or five miles from the village of Arroyo Grande, up the valley. Coroner Tullman held an inquest on the body of the murdered man, and returned the following verdict: "We find the deceased to be Eugene Walker, aged 30 years, that he came to his death on the 31st of March, by a rifle shot by Julius Hemmi, who is hereby charged with the crime of murder, and that Peter Hemmi and George Geise are accessories before the fact". The jurors were J. B. Townsend, J. N. Jatta, J. J. Whittenberg, J. Maker and Walter Whitely. An inquest was also held on the bodies of the two Hemmis and the verdict rendered that they came to their death by hanging, by parties unknown.
