Obituary
MOUNTAIN CABIN SCENE OF MURDER
John Otego, a Filipino employed on the J. H. Morsehead ranch at Portola, was shot and killed late Saturday night in a cabin on the La Honda Road, about a mile west of Woodruff Inn, by a fellow countryman names John Creisostomo. The latter is now in the county jail in this city charged with murder. He was arrested by Sheriff Michael Sheehan, at the scene of the shooting, Monday morning. A brother of Creisostomo, Enos, was also taken into custody.
The brothers assert that the shooting was the outcome of a quarrel in the bunkhouse. Creisostomo used a double barrel shot gun to kill Atego. The entire charge entered the back of the latter and penetrated the kidneys. Death was instantaneous.
The body of the dead man was brought to this city by Deputy Coroner John A. Layng and is not at the Redwood City undertaking parlors on Broadway. Dr. J. F. H. Dykes performed an autopsy on the body Monday afternoon.
Neither Cresostomo or his brother seemed inclined to discuss the shooting to any great extent, save to say that the former killed Otego after a quarrel. The slayer, according to persons living in the vicinity of Woodruf Inn, and who knew him, had been acting very queerly of late and it is thought that his mind had become deranged. He had been working for B. D. Weeks, La Honda rancher, and the father of Percy D. Weeks, proprietor of Woodruff Inn, off and on for some time. He bore a good reputation among those who knew him in the vicinity of La Honda and was considered of a very peaceful nature.
Otego was about 35 years of age. He was married and had two small boys, one aged 3 and the other aged 9. It was understood he is separated from his wife.
