Obituary
MRS. MARY E. GILBERT
Redwood City Standard
June 3, 1926
Redwood City lost another of its pioneer residents last week when Mrs. Mary Gilbert passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ella Leary at 211 Bradford Street, Thursday morning. Death followed an illness of over a year. Born in Ohio 71 years ago, the deceased came to California at a very young age settling in San Mateo County. She married Frank Gilbert, pioneer farmer and milkman who passed away several years ago. One of Mrs. Leary's cherished memories was her meeting President Lincoln. She was eight years old at the time and had been chosen to sing the Star Spangled Banner at a fourth of July celebration in Indiana, with her parents at the time. Lincoln with General Sheridan and other notables occupied seats on the platform when Mary, the little girl came to the platform to perform. The President picked her up and carried her to her seat and then held her on his knee while she rendered the song. When she finished he affectionately kissed her and handed her back to her parents.
Mrs. Gilbert in addition to her daughter, leaves two sons, Horace, residing in Merced and Allison, a contractor in Los Angeles, also seven grandchildren.
Rev. C.A. Parker of the Baptist Church, and an old friend, conducted the funeral services from James Crowe Company. Interment in Union Cemetery.

Son of Baruch Hoskins Gilbert and Fanny Skellinger of Yates.
========================================
S. B. Gilbert, an old and highly esteemed pioneer resident of San Mateo county, died at his residence in Redwood City at an early hour Thursday morning.
Mr. Gilbert had been sick but a short time. Just two weeks before his death he was suddenly stricken with paralysis of the brain. At first it was thought that he would recover. He seemed to be getting along as well as could be expected up to the ninth day. On that day he had another slight attack, and from then on he began to slowly sink.
The deceased was a native of Herkimer county, New York. He was born in August, 1825, and was consequently 66 years, and 6 months of age at the time of his death. He started across the plains for California in 1849, and arrived in this State in the spring of 1850. In 1852 he removed to this county, where he continually resided up to the time of his death. He was a surveyor by profession. In the fall of 1870 he was elected county surveyor, and served two years. In 1872 he again received the nomination and was elected, serving two more years. Since then he has repeatedly refused the office, preferring to spend his leisure time at his ranch on top of the mountain.
On June 11, 1859, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Watkins, daughter of the late Captain Watkins.
A devoted wife and seven children - George, William, Henry, Mrs. Al Green, Emma, Jessie and Eva survive him.
The remains were interred in Union Cemetery.

Obituary
WILLIAM B. GILBERT
Redwood City Democrat
Jan. 24, 1907
Wm. B. Gilbert, the County Surveyor, died last evening at his home in this city, after a long and painful illness. He was troubled with heart disease, so his demise was not unexpected and he passed away surrounded by his family who had been summoned to his bedside. Will, as he was known by everyone, was born on the mountain near Woodside 43 years ago and received his education in the public schools and in the office of his father S.B. Gilbert, who died several years ago and who had been county Surveyor before him. The deceased was a painstaking officer and one of the most popular men in the county as his repeated return to office would indicate. His first election took place in 1894 and he held the position continually since that time. He was a genial large hearted man of quiet demeanor and strong friendships, and there are none who knew him but will mourn his untimely decease. Besides his widow and two children, he leaves a mother, two brothers and four sisters. The entire county will mourn with them and extend to them their sincerest sympathy. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon to be held at the house by Rev. H.L. Foote of St. Peters Episcopal Church. The internment will be in Union Cemetery.
