Dec 28, 1899, Died as Christmas Dawned
On Christmas Eve, while bells pealed forth a welcome to the happiest season of the year and the rapturous laughter of the little ones of every household heralded the dawn of the day of joy and glad tidings, one home in Redwood was darkened in sorrow and one more of Redwood City’s most estimable citizens had passed into the rest that knows no awaking.
Monday evening Andrew Jumel died at his home on Fourth Street after a short illness. Six months ago his good wife, with whom he had spent 36 years of happy wedded life, proceeded him to the grave, and the days that intervened before the summons came to the aged husband, bowed with the weight of years, were those of yearning to join her who had gone before.
Andrew Jumel was born in France 80 years ago. He came to this country in 1857 and hewed out his home in the mountains twenty-two years ago. He moved his family to this city and some years later gave up active labor to spend his declining years here. Deceased leaves a daughter, Mrs. Lottie Wilcox and little granddaughter.
The funeral took place Tuesday at 2 o’clock, services being conducted at St. Peters Episcopal Church services by Rev. B.G. Lee and Rev J.O. Lincoln and many old friends attended and followed the body to Union Cemetery, where the interment took place.

REBECCA J JUMEL
Redwood City Democrat

A Pioneer Gone to Rest
One more of San Mateo County’s respected pioneers has laid down the burdens of life and gone to rest beyond the tomb. Last Saturday, Mrs. Rebecca J. Jumel, wife of Andrew Jumel, quietly passed from earth after an illness of two years.
Deceased was born in Worcester, Mass. 72 years ago. In July 1863, she was married to Andrew Jumel and for many years resided at the old family home on the mountain.
Twenty-two years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Jumel and their daughter, now Mrs. Lottie Wilcox, moved to this city and during those years, the deceased has endeared herself to a large circle of friends by Whom she will be longed missed and mourned.
The burial took place Monday afternoon. Solemn funeral services were held at the Episcopal Church at 4 o’clock by Rev. George Wallace assisted by Rev. B.G. Lee. The choir sang softly and sweetly “Rock of Ages” and “Nearer My God to Thee”. At Union Cemetery a short service was held by the two clergymen. The following old friends of the family acted as pall bearers: P.P. Chamberlain, Mathew Hedge, W.H Lipp, George W. Lovie, James Hilton, William Holder.
Mrs. Jumel leaves a sister and brother, A. Mathewson of this city and Mrs. Packard of San Gregorio, friends and neighbors who assisted and sympathize with them during their sore trouble. They desire to return thanks to all.
