Obituary
Frank King, as told by John Edmonds
That winding, sometimes narrow, road that runs from Woodside Road to Skyline is well known as King’s Mountain Road, it is named after the very popular and somewhat eccentric Frank King who owned and ran the hotel that stood on the northwest corner of today’s King’s Mountain Road and Skyline Boulevard and Tunitas Creek Road. The area was known as “Mountain “in the late 19th century.
Frank King arrived in Redwood City in the early 1860s and took up residence in this rural town of creeks and Bay waters. He quickly became involved in the hotel business as the lumber activities increased and the town grew. Frank had been trained as a barber so he set up his chair and scissors in the hotels he worked in and these institutions became popular with those lumbermen who came into town by about 8 double wagons per day. The lumbermen needed at place to stay overnight, they needed food and drink, and Frank was certainly one who could solve their problems. Frank enjoyed food and drink often to the extent that it sometimes got him in trouble, especially the drinking part.
Frank’s mountain house on Skyline became well known throughout the Bay area and beyond. People came from great distances and often spent several days or weeks renting rooms in the hotel. The atmosphere was always very positive and the food the Frank’s wife cooked was always the very best. Of course, the booze was always first rate as well.
