To the Chiefs and Members of Metamora Tribe No. 24, Imp'd O. R. M.
Your committee appointed to draft a memorial on the death of Brother Joshua Underwood, most respectfully report as follows:
One by one the old chiefs who bore the burden of the struggle during the early great sums of our tribal existence are passing from our midst. But few of those whose names appear upon our charter list remain with us to-day. Let us for a few breaths lay aside our business and with bowed heads and reverent feelings pay our tribute of respect to the one who has just crossed the dark river.
Brother Josuha Underwood departed this life at his home in Berkeley, on the first sun of Snow Moon, G. S. D. 407. He was one of our most zealous chieftains in those early suns, a worthy brother and an earnest advocate of the principals of freedom, friendship and charity, and now that it has pleased the Great Spirit to remove him from these earthly hunting grounds, let us hope that his canoe has been lovingly directed safely to the happy hunting grounds of the hereafter, and that his spirit will there rest in peace forever more.
