William Witzell joined the 6th California Infantry company “K” which was
established at Fort Point in San Francisco. This company was ordered to Fort Humboldt on February 1, 1964, where they had skirmishes with Indians at Booth’s Bar, Kneeland’s Prairie, Boynton’s and Grouse Creek. On May 23, 1864, they were sent to Benicia Barracks and Fort Alcatraz (where they acted as prison guards as well as defending against Confederate attacks within the Bay). They remained at these locations until they mustered out. Some of the men from company “K” were placed aboard the steamers, Uncle Sam and Constitution, and they sailed south along the coast to Mexico in 1864. The purpose, of this trip, was to protect passengers on other ships while the French ports to these countries. Those who remained at Benicia Barracks were protecting the West Coast’s largest weapons and ammunition storage facility.

                    DISPONDENCY LEADS TO SUICIDE
Eggert E. Wolters Prefers Death to Being a Cripple for Life
Brooding over his misfortunes and weighed down with dispondency Eggbert Wolters sought surcrease of the troubles of his life in suicide last Friday night. Wolters was an old resident of this city, having long been employed at the Frank tannery. During the strike of last fall he went out with his fellow workmen, and during October, while employed at construction work on the railroad, lost his foot. Since his return from the hospital Wolters had not been the same man. Despite the efforts of his friends to cheer him up, he became melancholy and often talked of ending his life.
Recently he was given a position as night watchman at the tannery. Friday night he was on duty as usual, but seemed more dejected than usual. At 9 o'clock Ernest Drivon, who is also a watchman, was making his rounds when he became upon the dead body of Wolters in the currying-shop. A revolver lying near by and a gaping wound in the temple disclosed the cause of his death. The Cororner was at once notified and the body removed to the morgue.
Wolters was a member of Metamora tribe of Red Men and the Tanner's union, both of which organizations attended his funeral Sunday afternoon. Short services were held by Rev. F. H. Maar at the lodge room, and at the grave the impressive burial rites of the Red Men were read.
Wolters was a native of Germany, aged 51 years. He leaves a wife, who is almost heart broken at his death.
