COLUMBUS BRYENT
Redwood City Democrat
March 17, 1903
Death of Columbus Bryant.
Columbus Bryant, for 30 years a resident of this city, died unexpectedly
Tuesday morning. Mr. Bryant was a native of Maine, aged 79 years. He
came to this county in 1853. His property in this city consists of four improved lots fronting on Phelps and Heller streets.
He is believed to have some money which he secreted about his premises. A nephew, John Weymouth, is on his way here from Tacoma, and on his arrival arrangements for the funeral will be made.

COLUMBUS BRYENT'S COIN
Was His Own Banker and Never Had a Failure.
Saturday at 10 o'clock Public Administrator Crowe will sell at public auction the horse, buggy, and harness and other personal property of the late
Columbus Bryent, who died last week. It was understood that the deceased had considerable money in his possession
which he kept concealed about his premises, but its whereabouts has not
yet been discovered. Bryent once lost a large sum of money through the
failure of a bank, and ever since had a lack of confidence in such institutions. It is possible that he planted his coin so securely that it will
never again see the light of day.

A searching party has been digging up the lots of Columbus Bryent in hopes that they will find the gold which he said he had buried. Mr. Weymonth, his nephew, of Tacoma, is still here and is looking after the estate.

Obituary
Judge George H. Buck was the longest tenured judge in San Mateo County history. George was born in Harrison, Maine. He began studying law with the Boston firm of Woodbury and Ingalls and was admitted to the Maine Bar at the age of 24 years.
George Buck held the position of associate attorney for the Cincinnati and Lafayette Railroad. Failing health forced him to move to the milder climate of California; he arrived in Redwood City with 45 cents in his pocket and became a day laborer to earn his room and board. In his off-hours he managed to organize a law practice and garnered an impressive clientele.
Buck was elected district attorney of San Mateo County in 1882 and held that position for eight years. In 1890 he ran for county judge and was elected, he remained in that position as sole county judge for 42 years, hearing an estimated 20,000 cases.
George Buck was a powerful leader and politician in San Mateo County business, government and social life whose influence was known to swing many votes; for this reason the newspapers occasionally referred to him as "Boss Buck," although members of the community knew him to be a generous man, noted for his gifts and donations to families, organizations and charities. He was a dedicated and supportive member of the International Order of Odd Fellows chapter in Redwood City.

Obituary
Norman Buck 1861-1888. When Norman was murdered, it was his brother George H. Buck who retrieved Norman's body from New Mexico and arranged this memorial. I assume the picture was taken soon after burial and erection of the monument so George could send the picture home to Maine. I have visited this gravesite in Redwood City, CA. The stone reads, "Norman [Buck] born at Harrison, Maine July 13, 1861 died June 23, 1888." Judge George H. Buck is also now buried in this same site.
