Obituary
The San Mateo County Gazette, Saturday, November 16, 1861
Burns John, Esq., County Treasurer, died at his residence, in this place on Thursday last, after a period of more than ordinary suffering, from the effects of injuries received four weeks since and noticed by us at the time. Cut off in the prime of life and the midst of his usefulness, the loss of Mr. John is a heavy blow to the community, but the loss falls with peculiar severity upon his family whom he was much attached. The united verdict of all who knew him constitutes one of the highest tributes which can be paid to the memory of a dear departed friend who was a very honest man. He had just come here at the time of his injuries, to assume the duties of his office and was preparing to bring hither to take up residence among us. They have since followed him, but alas, in sorrow and affliction to a desolated home.
At the time of his death, Mr. John was about 38 years of age. He leaves a wife and four small children to mourn his untimely end and with whom all our citizens deeply sympathize.

HIGHWAY 'V' TURN CAUSE OF ACCIDENT
Dana F. Burton, 25, is Victim of Mishap
Losing control of his motorcycle on the V-turn at Middlefield and Semi-Circle roads, south of Redwood City, Dana F. Burton, 25, a Palo Alto oil station employee, living at 1931 Roosevelt avenue, Redwood City, was fatally injured about 7 o'clock last night when the vehicle crashed into a telephone pole.
Burton died at 3:45 o'clock this morning in the Community Hospital, Beresford, according to Drs. Robert Monteith and Harry Mason of the emergency hospital here, who attended him.
Death was caused by fracture of the skull. The young man did not regain consciousness during the night.
Richard Martin, 43 Arch street, captain of the Sequoia Union High school swimming team, who with a companion picked up Burton and brought him to the emergency hospital, said the motorcyclist passed him at a rapid rate of speed and failed to negotiate the turn. The rider was thrown over the handlebars of the motorcycle and his head struck the pole. The other man was L. F. Bates, Ninth avenue, North Fair Oaks.
Officer James Snider of the Redwood City Police Department investigated and turned the information over to the state traffic bureau.
Burton's body is at the Layng & Tinney chapel here. He is survived by a wife, Kathleen, a year-old son, Dana Jr. and his father, J. Harry Burton. He was a native of West Virginia.
Burton was on his way to work at a Middlefield road service station near Palo Alto at the time of the accident. He was also employed during the daytime at a Palo Alto sheet metal works. He was a former Marine, being discharged from the service in 1928. He was the son-in-law of John D. Gish, principal of the Woodside school.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2 o'clock in the Layng & Tinney Funeral Home. Internment will be in Union Cemetery.
