              From the book "History of San Mateo", 1883:
              John Donald. This old pioneer was born in Cumberland county, England,
              March 21 , 1811. He came to the United States in 1835, and settled in Philadelphia. In 1838 he went to Boston , and on June 1, 1849, started for
              California around Cape Horn , landing in San Francisco January 7, 1850. He went to the mines, where he remained one year, and then returned to Boston, where he landed in February, 1851. In October of that year he again came to California , arriving on January 12, 1852. He lived in San Francisco until December of that year, when he came to San Mateo county, and settled at the place where John Parrott now lives . Here he remained three years, and then bought and moved to his present farm , situated on the road from San Mateo to Redwood City. He married Ann Thornton , and has three children .
