OWNER OF THE FAMOUS A. W. POOLEY CAR IS KILLED; CAR DEMOLISHED
On his way home to his bride of 13 months and little baby, after a day of work, Henry Hanff, 28, an electrician of Redwood City, was instantly killed on Wednesday when his automobile was struck by a Southern Pacific passenger train at the Arguello street crossing in Redwood City a block from his own home. Hanff was almost instantly killed and was dead when he reached the office of a physician to which he was hurried. His auto was demolished.
The auto in which he was riding and which was totally destroyed was the famous 1916 Ford roadster owned and driven for 9 years by Arthur W. Pooley, the well known musician and piano expert, who was found dead in bed in the American hotel in this city about a year ago.
That car was his pet and it was one of the most wonderful Ford cars in existence. He kept it bright and shining, it looked like new. It was never in a serious accident, although it carried Mr. Pooley many thousands of miles each year on his business trips through the country and he loved it and it received much newspaper publicity.
After Mr. Pooley's death, his daughter, Miss Edith M. Pooley, sold the car to Hanff who was then studying gardening and who worked at the Pooley family's beautiful home. He was about to leave there and Miss Pooley sold him the auto with the understanding that he was to take it away from the vicinity as she and her mother could not bear to see it driven by another, for the memories it would bring back to them. So he bought it and took it away and that was the last hey heard of the car until the press dispatches told of the tragic death of the new owner, a splendid young man, who leaves a widow and little babe to mourn his loss. It is with strange coincidence that the only two owners of the beautiful little car should come to sudden, tragic, and instantaneous deaths.
