EDWARD A EIKERENKOTTER
In the forty-fourth year of his age Edward A. Eikerenkotter, ex-County Clerk and Recorder of San Mateo County, passed away at Palo Alto early last Saturday morning. Appendicitis had done its deadly work, and after suffering intense pain for several days he at last succumbed to the malady.
Mr. Eikerenkotter was born at Coloma, El Dorado County, and at a very early date removed with his parents to Searsville, which was at that time a bustling town of several hundred inhabitants. Young Eikerenkotter attended the public school at that place and afterwards graduated from Heald's business college. Spending a few years in various mercantile venture he launched into politics. His career in the political arena of the county has been one of wonderful success. Always genial, courteous and obliging, he made friends of all and was never defeated for office.
In 1879, when only 26 years of age, he secured the Republican nomination for Auditor, and in a hard-fought campaign defeated Frank Mengher of San Mateo by 96 votes. With him on the ticket that year was Charles N. Felton, who was elected Assemblyman. He held office until 1882 when he secured a renomination. This time his opponent was R. C. Hall of Menlo Park, whom he defeated by a small margin of 12 votes. The Journal, which was then in existence, made an unwarranted attack upon him, and his friends had about given up the contest when he rallied them and managed to pull through.
In 1884 the Republican party chose him its standard-bearer for the office of Clerk and Recorder. He was pitted against ex-Judge James W. Bicknell. This was the hardest political battle he ever had. The combined artillery of the Democratic party was trained on him. Bicknell was the incumbent of the office, was rich, influential, popular and had friends all through the county. Notwithstanding this Eikerenkotter defeated his opponent by 47 votes. At the election of 1886 Mr. Eikerenkotter again triumphed over Mr. Bicknell by a majority of 246. At the expiration of his term of office he became a deputy under J. F. Johnston, a position he held until 1895.
Mr. Eikerenkotter was a thoroughly competent man, as all who had business with the offices he filled can testify to.
In 1880 he married Miss Kate McNulty of this city. She was a niece of Joseph P. Ames, who resided in this county at that time and afterwards became warden of San Quentin prison. She died some twelve years ago, leaving three children.
After retiring from the courthouse Mr. Eikerenkotter went to Palo Alto, where he resided until his death.
The funeral took place Monday afternoon from the Congregational church. The remains were followed to Union Cemetery by a large number of friends and relatives who had known and admired him in life.
He leaves three children - two sons and a daughter - besides four brothers and a sister.

Obituary
MRS CATHERINE EIKERENKOTTER
S.C. Co Times and Gazette
Our quiet community was painfully shocked and surprised yesterday at the announcement of the death of Mrs. Catherine Eikerenkotter, wife of County Clerk Eikerenkotter. At the time of her death, Mrs. Eikerenkotter was suffering from typhoid fever, having contracted the disease but a few days previous to the birth of her child, which occurred on the 26th of June. She was then so weakened in constitution that medical skill proved of no avail and she slowly sank until 10 o'clock Friday morning when she quietly passed away.
She was a native of San Francisco, although the greater part of her life was spent in this county. During her younger days she resided at Spanish town with her uncle, Hon. J.P. Ames, coming from that side of the county about fifteen years ago to Redwood City where she has lived ever since. On July 11, 1878, then Miss Kate McNulty, she was married to Mr. E.A. Eikerenkotter who was serving his first term as County Auditor. Since that time she has given birth to five children, two of whom are dead. She has one sister living, Mrs. Gage of San Francisco.
Mrs. Eikerenkotter was without exception, loved and respected in the community. Everyone knew the blithe winsome little lady as a happy school girl not many years ago, and later as a loving wife and a devoted mother. She will be missed, not alone by those to whom she was near and dear, but by a warm circle of friends and acquaintances among whom her presence spread sunshine and happiness, among whom her merry smiles and pleasant words in this county in the people with whom both he and his wife have resided since childhood. The funeral will take place from the residence on Stanbaugh St. on Sunday at 2 o'clock to Union Cemetery where interment will take place.

Obituary
MRS. AUGUSTUS EIKERENKOTTER
Times Gazette
May 2, 1891
On Tuesday morning last a physician was hastily summoned to proceed to Searsville and attend upon Mrs. Augusta Eikerenkotter who had suddenly been stricken with a serious illness at the old home, now a residence of her son, George. The worst of fears were soon confirmed and she lingered speechless and apparently unconscious until half past 10 o'clock when death ensued. She had gone to join her husband and the great majority in spirit land. No longer ago than last Friday night she took a happy part in the celebration among her old friends, the Pioneers. Not fifteen minutes before the fatal stroke she had signified her intention to go to the home of her daughter Mrs. Otto Klump in San Francisco that day. Upon the alarm, she was found almost ready for breakfast reclining upon the floor and she never rallied from the attack. Her age was sixty four years and she leaves six children unto whom she had been an affectionate mother. She was a native of Germany and came here with her husband from El Dorado County in 1853, having resided in this county ever since.
The funeral was held Thursday afternoon starting from the home ranch at Searsville at 2 o'clock. Services were officiated by Rev. L.D. Rathbone and the Congregational Church Choir consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Dodge, Mrs. J.B. Simms and Wm. McDonald sang several appropriate selections, The pall bearers were Wm. Lloyd, Jacob Kriess and Wm. Hughes of Redwood City, John H. Sears of La Honda, Thomas Shine of Woodside, and Joseph Spaulding of Mayfield. The funeral procession which formed to accompany the remains to Union Cemetery where the interment took place was very long and testified to the high esteem to which Mrs. Eikerenkotter was held. It consisted of some sixty carriages. Services were also held at the grave. The floral pieces were exceedingly numerous including all the flowers of the season. A floral pillow and several crosses were especially noted. There survives Mrs. Eikerenkotter's five sons Edward, Charles, Julius, Albert and George all of this county and one daughter, Mrs. Otto Klump of San Francisco.
