Filkins Rites Set For Tomorrow
Funeral services for Robert Filkins, 78-year-old North Fair Oaks carpenter who died of a heart attack while driving in his machine toward Redwood City, will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow from the Layng and Tinney Funeral Home. Internment will follow at Union Cemetery.
Filkins is survived by his wife Clara; two children, Mrs. Lucy South and Mrs. Dora Arnold, and four grandchildren, Max and Kenneth Green and Richard and Jean South.
Filkins is a native of Wisconsin. He had lived here for the past 10 years.

      Mrs. Augusta Finger died Wednesday after suffering a great deal from a malignant cancer of the face. She was a native of Germany aged 75 years and 2 months. The funeral took place Thursday afternoon and the internment was in Union Cemetery.

        Herman Finger, the adopted son of Theodore Finger of Redwood, was killed on last Friday afternoon while at work in the store of Holbrook, Merrill and Co. of San Francisco, by the fall of a heavy piece of machinery which he was loading on a truck.

        The deceased having been raised in this community was well known and has many friends. He was a remarkably steady man but the care of a wife and four children had left but little leisure for accumulation. He was but 35 years old and just in his prime. Interment at Union Cemetery.

        Crushed to Death

        Herman T. Finger, head porter for Holbrook, Merrill & Stetson, corner of Market and Beale streets, was almost instantly killed yesterday afternoon by an iron cornice folder weighing 800 pounds falling on him. The deceased with five other employees were engaged with lifting the piece of machinery upon an elevator when one of the legs snapped off and it toppled over upon him, crushing him to death. The deceased was a native of Louisiana, aged 40 years, a member of California Lodge No. 1 I.O.O.F., and he leaves a widow and four children residing at No 737 McAllister street.

            August 6, 1887
            The curt dispatch which in this mornings dailies will carry to the readers of the state the news of Theodore Finger's terrible death. The story of the tragedy may be as curtly told here in as possible. Bent with the manifest burdens of his seventy-two years, preoccupied, short sighted, at least slightly deaf, he was crossing the railroad track which passes the entrance to the lane leading to his home, as was his daily habit. He heard not the approaching train. For more than 33 years, Theodore Finger has lived where all that is mortal of him now lies. Before this was a county he began to make his home there. He was almost a young man then, scarce forty; vigorous, wiry, fond of work and finding it daily. For more than 33 years he lived there, a daily exemplar of frugality, of probity, of good citizenship in its best sense. Mr. Finger was born in Germany 72 years ago. To Mr. and Mrs Finger were born three sons. Henry J. is their only living child. He is a druggist in Santa Barbara. But one of their ways of doing good, and one of the noblest manifestations of their personal generosity was their adoption of children. Five of them became inmates of their happy, always attractive home and one of them, Miss Josie Finger, is now her foster mothers closest companion. The hospitality which gave the home of the Fingers its charm was an indescribable blending of old-world courtesy and new-world informality. Their home was Liberty Hall.

            August 13, 1887 The last rites to the remains of the late Theodore Finger were paid last Monday afternoon. Religious services were held at the Congregational Church, Pastor Pascoe and Rev. H.E. Jewett of Oakland conducting. We desire to correct two important errors in our account of the accident. We said on what we believed good authority that Mr. Finger was both short sighted and deaf. On the contrary he was far sighted and his hearing was acute.

              Sunday last a large number of friends gathered at the Congregational Church in this city to perform the last sad rites for Mrs. Mina Finger, one of the oldest settlers in this vicinity, who died in Santa Barbara on the 4 inst. Rev. C.H. Stevens delivered a touching eulogy on the deceased mentioning some of her many ostentatious charitable actions. After the services the funeral proceeded to Union Cemetery, the place of interment, The pallbearers were P.P. Chamberlain, C. Littlejohn, Fr. J.S. Ross, L.P. Behrens, Robert Brown and J.F. Utter, all personal friends of the deceased.

              Mrs. Mina Finger, a former resident of Redwood City and a pioneer of the county, passed away at the home of her son, Henry J. Finger at Santa Barbara, Thursday at the advanced age of 87 years. The deceased before moving to Santa Barbara several years ago, resided here for over fifty years. She came here with her husband at a time when there were few houses in Redwood and located on a piece of land near town known as Finger Grove.

              Mrs. Finger spent her long life in doing good, alleviating the sufferings of others and assisting the needy. The latch string of her home always hung on the outside. No one left her abode hungry. She always fed and housed the weary way farer. As many as thirty tramps would be taken care of in a day by this kind and benevolent woman. She loved to do good and aid those in distress. Those who knew her best will be the most enthusiastic in sounding her praises. Mrs. Finger loved to recount the stirring incidents of pioneer days and when in this reminiscent mood told of some interesting history of Redwood City's early days. She took part in the first Fourth of July parade held here over fifty years ago and as a singular coincidence was in the last one held in 1909, Redwood City's golden jubilee. In the first celebration Mrs. Finger road in a farm wagon hauled by a pair of mules while in the last parade was seated in an up to date automobile.

              Thus was contrasted the present with the past. Mrs. Finger is said to have been the only woman in the United States entitled to a pension for personal services during the Mexican War. Mrs. Finger, who was the mother of H.J. Finger, member of the State Board of Pharmacy, and special envoy to the Hague, during the Opium, ministered to the sick and injured during the Mexican War, through which her husband fought as a United States soldier. Because of her work the government awarded her a medal at the centennial exposition in 1876.

              Finkler Rites Thursday A.M. in R. C. Chapel

              Funeral services for Henry C. Finkler, 72, for the past half century secretary of the California Supreme Court, and pioneer resident of Redwood City, will be held at the Layng & Tinney chapel at 11 o’clock tomorrow morning.

              Final rites will be conducted by the Redwood City Lodge No. 168, Free and Accepted Masons, of which Mr. Finkler was a prominent member. Interment will follow in the Masonic plot in Union Cemetery.

              Surviving Mr. Finkler is a sister, Miss Christine Finkler of San Francisco. He was a native of Sacramento, and was the husband of Mrs. Alieen Finkler, who passed away several years ago.

              Mr. Finkler’s suicide yesterday was attributed by friends to a mental breakdown brought on by ill health and despondency over the death of his wife. Up to the day before his death, he had continued to hold down the post of secretary, however, to which he was appointed in April 1877.
              Judge Waste yesterday issued a formal statement expressing the court’s sorrow at Mr. Finkler’s death.

              Two years ago Mr. Finkler was presented with a medal commemorating his 50th year of service to the state, and he was at the time of his death one of the oldest public servants in point of time.

              An inquest will be held on Tuesday in the Layng & Tinney chapel by Dr. J . C. McGovern.

              Dr. McGovern yesterday was appointed special administrator f Mr. Finkler’s estate.
