JOSEPH STILLMAN SPAULDING
By: John Edmonds
The 1867 business directory for San Mateo County listed Joseph Stillman
Spaulding as a saloon keeper in the Town of Searsville. Joseph Spaulding came to Searsville from his native state of New Hampshire, coming first to California in 1852 with several friends all of whom were lumbermen. Spaulding also came with his wife, Clara who was a native of New Brunswick. Joseph Spaulding, upon first arriving at Searsville, opened a mercantile store in partnership with a man named McKeen “Spaulding and McKeen” and the business prospered. After a number of successful months in business Joseph traveled back to his native home and then returned to Searsville with his brother, sister and brother-in-law. The Spauldings built a lumber mill and began milling redwoods and hauling the milled lumber to Redwood City. The Spauldings purchased property from Horace Templeton and built their house on “A” Street. Clara, also known as Lisa, formally Lisa Evans, became very well known for her great kindness. She built a boarding house and used this structure to help anybody who needed help but also to teach Chinese cooks to cook American food. A substantial number of these Chinese came to Searsville specifically to learn this trade.
Joseph Spaulding owned land right in the middle of the path where the
Spring Valley Water Company would be building the Searsville Dam. Joseph refused to sell to the water company. He owned several lots and offered to sell for $2,000 per lot but the water company would not pay. By chance two beautiful young ladies approached Spaulding and offered to purchase the property for substantially less than the asking price. Spaulding sold to the young ladies who, of course, were working for the water company. This was fairly typical behavior for the water company who often played these semi crooked games to their benefit. Clara Spaulding passed away on July 5, 1881 and was buried in plot 36 in Union Cemetery. She was 72 years of age when she died. By 1884 Joseph moved to Mayfield in Santa Clara County. Mr. Spaulding became the father-in-law of John Stafford, the proprietor of the Pioneer Stables of Redwood City. Joseph Spaulding died on April 17, 1884 and buried beside his wife in plot 36 in Union Cemetery.
