Obituary
Thomas Davis
7th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment, Company “H” and “G”
By John Edmonds
Thomas Davis migrated to the United States from his native South Wales several years after his birth in 1838. The Davis family joined a lot of other Davis’s in Pennsylvania all from Wales along with many other migrants from Wales during that period. The primary reason for this migration was the coal miner’s strike and the opportunity to use that profession in Pennsylvania.
Thomas enlisted in the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment on October 18th 1861 and fought through the Battle of Perryville, Stone’s River, Hoover’s Gap, Chickamauga, the Battle of Resica and the siege of Atlanta. The unit was discharged on June 17th 1865.
Davis was injured in the battles in Kentucky, his right shoulder was shot and he suffered seriously. Following the War he was housed in the Old Soldiers Home in Kansas and then sent to Los Angeles where he was similarly housed. His arrival in California was in 1889 and he was 49 years old when he came to this state. Davis arrival in the Bay area was probably to similar housing but he joined the Redwood City chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic and participated in their activities to the extent that he could. When he died on July 7th 1905 and was buried in the Grand Army’s plot in Union Cemetery.
