Obituary
MRS. MARY E. GILBERT
Redwood City Standard
June 3, 1926
Redwood City lost another of its pioneer residents last week when Mrs. Mary Gilbert passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elia Leary at 211 Bradford Street, Thursday morning. Death followed an illness of over a year. Born in Ohio 71 years ago, the deceased came to California at a very young age settling in San Mateo County. She married Frank Gilbert, pioneer farmer and milkman who passed away several years ago. One of Mrs. Leary's cherished memories was her meeting President Lincoln. She was eight years old at the time and had been chosen to sing the Star Spangled Banner at a fourth of July celebration in Indiana, with her parents at the time. Lincoln with General Sheridan and other notables occupied seats on the platform when Mary, the little girl came to the platform to perform. The President picked her up and carried her to her seat and then held her on his knee while she rendered the song. When she finished he affectionately kissed her and handed her back to her parents.
Mrs. Gilbert in addition to her daughter, leaves two sons, Horace, residing in Merced and Allison, a contractor in Los Angeles, also seven grandchildren.
Rev. C.A. Parker of the Baptist Church, and an old friend, conducted the funeral services from James Crowe Company. Interment in Union Cemetery.

Obituary
WILLIAM B. GILBERT
Redwood City Democrat
Jan. 24, 1907
Wm. B. Gilbert, the County Surveyor, died last evening at his home in this city, after a long and painful illness. He was troubled with heart disease, so his demise was not unexpected and he passed away surrounded by his family who had been summoned to his bedside. Will, as he was known by everyone, was born on the mountain near Woodside 43 years ago and received his education in the public schools and in the office of his father S.B. Gilbert, who died several years ago and who had been county Surveyor before him. The deceased was a painstaking officer and one of the most popular men in the county as his repeated return to office would indicate. His first election took place in 1894 and he held the position continually since that time. He was a genial large hearted man of quiet demeanor and strong friendships, and there are none who knew him but will mourn his untimely decease. Besides his widow and two children, he leaves a mother, two brothers and four sisters. The entire county will mourn with them and extend to them their sincerest sympathy. The funeral will take place at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon to be held at the house by Rev. H.L. Foote of St. Peters Episcopal Church. The internment will be in Union Cemetery.
