Obituary
Christian Bähler (or Baehler without the umlaut) was born March 8, 1821 in Bern, Switzerland. Christian and his wife Magdalena (nee Trachsel) were the parents of seven children – five of whom immigrated to America in the 1880s. In Switzerland, the family mostly lived in the area of Wattenwil, near Thun and south of Bern.
Christian was a farmer, and also served as the Wattenwil village president. In 1891, Christian and Magdalena visited in America to see their children. Christian went to California where his son August was living, while Magdalena stayed with her sons in Illinois. She disliked the late spring Midwestern weather, however, and returned to Switzerland without her husband.
On March 18, 1891, after his wife’s return to Switzerland and without ever seeing his sons in Illinois, Christian died unexpectedly. He is buried in Redwood City, California, in the Union Cemetery.
