Obituary
Private John F. Brown, 3rd Regiment, Colorado Cavalry
John F. Brown served as a private in the 3rd Regiment, Colorado Cavalry, which was called up for 100 days service on August 20 and was mustered out in Denver on December 31, 1864. During its service it was only engaged in a few minor skirmishes with Arapahoe and Cheyenne Indians in the Colorado District.
We believe that he was born in 1842, and learned how to be a “chair maker”, most probably from his father.
He settled in California after the Civil War and lived on the San Francisco Peninsula, in San Mateo County, where he joined the Grand Army of the Republic fraternal organization. John was a chair maker which was a satisfying and profitable career. He joined in the activities of the Grand Army, many of which were philanthropic to the community and John contributed to that effort.
He was well liked and the sad parade to Union Cemetery on April 29, 1879 and the burial in the Grand Army’s plot was a memorable event in the Redwood City Community.
