June 20, 1907
John Howell Sears, a pioneer of this county and after whom Searsville was named, died at his home in La Honda from pneumonia on Tuesday, at the advanced age of 84 years. Mr. Sears was born in Sullivan County, New York in 1823 and came to California in 1850. After traveling through the mines for some time, he returned to San Francisco and in 1853 came to this county. The next year he built a house on the site of what was afterwards Searsville. Here he established a blacksmithing and wagon making shop and in 1857, he was in partnership with the late Daniel Ford. Disposing of his Searsville property in 1861, Mr. Sears moved to La Honda where he has remained up to the time of his death. His wife died some years ago leaving three children Wm M., Ida J. and Anna L Sears, as well as a grandson, Leonard M Sears who died with him. Mr. Sears established the first store in La Honda. He has been a well known character in this section of the county for many years and owned a large ranch where he lived. The funeral will take place today at 1:30 pm from the Congregational Church. Interment in Union Cemetery.
